Pride of Time: Review

Title: Pride of Time

Author: Anubis Ankh

Pairing: Severus Snape/ Hermione Granger

Rating: M/R (all in good taste)

Synopsis: Hermione quite literally crashes her way back through time by roughly twenty years. There is no going back; the only way is to go forward. And when one unwittingly interferes with time, what one expects may not be what time finds...

Review: Few authors have been able to take the Mauraders Era/Go Back in Time plot and make it into a masterpiece. The story is long, thorough, and detailed. It takes you on an adventure as Hermione lands in the 70's from her fifth year. As if traveling back in time wasn't enough, throw in a rocky friendship with Severus and a difficult, but loveable friendship with the Mauraders, Hermione is determined not to upset the delicate balance of time. That doesn't mean she's going to take the past laying down either! She wouldn't be Hermione Granger if she did.
I love this story, because of it's detailed look at Severus and Hermione's relationship and how it grows. I also love the little plot twists that make this story so unique.
There is even a side story to enjoy after you finish this one called Divide of Time which to be honest, I kind of like better than the original story, but that is for another review.

Just to Be Chapter 1: Prologue: The Forgotten, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net

Just to Be Chapter 1: Prologue: The Forgotten, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net by Amarti

                                                                                                          banner by me!

Pairing: Severus Snape/Hermione Granger
Rating: Mature/R

Synopsis: Post-DH, EWE. Six years after the war, Hermione discovers a neglected and abused population with no place in a post-Voldemort world, and the man who stayed behind to pick up the pieces. A story of reconciliation, redemption, and above all, love.

My View: I started reading this story from about three or four chapters in and I loved it. This is a unique plot which can be difficult in the HP fanfiction universe. Hermione finds out that there is a group of children being horribly neglected and abused. These are the children of the Death Eaters. Too young to defend themselves, they have been cast aside to be used and abused. I just wanted to hug those poor children! The story is not just about their road out of the depths of hell, but many of the original HP cast. Severus, feeling the need to redeem himself, takes it upon himself to care for those lost children, but he is only one man. This is the story of how these children cause Hermione, Harry, Severus, Luna, Neville, and Ginny to open up to the possibility of all things especially love and forgiveness. It's a touching, tender piece that will have you laugh and cry all at the same time. It's unique plot will reel you in while the way the author writes these characters will keep you reading.

Excellent work! I am just so happy that's it's done so I could put it up here. I have been unable to post many recommendations since I refuse to recommend on my blog an unfinished piece. Sounds harsh, but it's because I want to recommend completed pieces and so I can give a thorough honest review.

Fanfiction annoyances....

I have been reading fanfiction for nine years. I love it. I have met some truly talented authors and read some exciting tales through FF.net, but I have a list of grievances that won't let me be.

If you want people read and review your work here are some simple solutions when writing fanfiction.

1. Check your Grammar! I'm serious. I understand that there are writers out there to whom the English language is a second language and I forgive them, but to the rest of you out there. Check your damn grammar. We are not in elementary school anymore. You should know the difference between 'You're' and 'Your'. It makes your piece look sloppy. I understand that errors happen. You'll find errors in my work, but I do make an effort to correct them. You should do the same!

2. Enough with the damn Ipods! It's a magical world and I understand writers' especially in the HP universe to want to input a bit of Muggle technology into the universe of magic, but if I have to read one more story where some (probably teenager) puts an iPod or other Apple product into a fanfiction I am going to stop reading it. Firstly, it annoys me because the timeline. In HP the series ends in 1998. iPods were not around then. While I thought it was strange the way JK set up the timeline for the series, I respect the fact that it was her story! And when writers mess with the timeline offering up iPods and other Apple products, it just makes me want to smack some sense into the writer. And secondly, it annoys me because it is such a yuppie trendy poser move. A writer can write in Muggle music technology and not sound like a d-bag. The fact that writers add that bit in there just proves to me, as the reader, that the writer lacks creativity and intelligence due to the fact that they bought into this idea that Apple is somehow more than a company. Now I may sound like I hate Apple and I do, but I do own an iPod. And there are times when I want to just ditch the thing, but it plays my music and so I have kept it. I don't, however, buy into that trendy idea that iPods are a status symbol. It's a freaking iPod. That's all! It will not make you cooler, it will not make you smarter, but the fact that you bought into that idea that it would do all those things probably makes you less intelligent. If you want to buy into that trendy status symbol nonsense then by all means do so, but keep it out of your fanfiction.

3. POV, enough with the flip floppin'.  I am beyond fed up with authors flip flopping their points of view in a story. I will stop reading it and probably send you a nasty review. And here is why... it confuses the reader. It doesn't make you cool like Stephanie Meyer, it makes you look idiotic. If you want to do first person then do first person, while it isn't my favorite POV of story telling I will accept it. If you feel the need to tell a story from multiple points of view then do third person. You can jump around to each character and share their insights. I have noticed an increase in this over the past couple of years in the land of Fanfiction and makes me wonder if English teachers are just not teaching about third person properly. Keep it consistent otherwise your readers will be confused and probably ditch your fanfiction without reviewing it.

Those are my three major grievances of fanfiction. I probably have more, but I am cold and need to put on some socks. For all you Michiganders out there and others of the Midwest, stay warm!

Eight Years Chapter 1, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net

Eight Years Chapter 1, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net by Drivelicious

Synopsis: Hermione thought that using her time turner would help save lives; instead she found herself back in time and falling for the wrong Weasley. HG&BW

Pairing: Bill/Hermione

Rating: T/PG-13

My View: This story is short, but sweet. There aren't many Bill and Hermione stories out there, but I love this story. During the assault of Hogwarts (at the end of HBP) Hermione grabs a time turner and tries to go back to give the Order more time, but finds herself eight years in the past and runs into Head Boy himself, Bill Weasley. She stays at Hogwarts and hangs with Charlie, Bill, and Tonks. Quite quickly Bill and Hermione build a loving friendship that ignited into a romance, but Hermione does have to go back. So the only question is can love wait eight years.

I love this story. Bill is sweet and charming. I enjoyed all the characters. The author kept it pretty close to canon except what Hermione managed to change. You'll have to read to find out what.

Bookends Chapter 1, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net

Bookends Chapter 1, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net by Selmak

Synopsis: There's a new Weasley on the way! Arthur's the dad and Hermione's the mum! How do the Weasleys react?

Pairing: Hermione/Arthur W.

Rating: M/R (suggestions and language... it's not that bad people!)

My View: Now I know I have confessed to strange pairings in the past and this is one of those, but this story of two lonely people trying to solace and love together is heartwarming and tender. I was surprised at how short yet how wonderful it was. After ten years of marriage, Ron and Hermione divorce so that Ron can live with the love of his life, Harry Potter. Broken and childless she hatches a plan. She will go to a pub and pick up a man! Any man to do the job. Meanwhile Arthur who is so horribly lonely after watching his beloved wife's memory slip away, he goes to a pub just be surrounded by some noise for a few hours. Quickly, these two lonely broken hearted people share something incredibly sweet. What will the Weasleys have to say about this?

I love Arthur, Hermione, George, Percy, and Angelina in this story. Teddy is really sweet too. These characters are well written and while the story isn't that long there is nothing wasted here. It may not sound like a pairing you would normally read and for that I will agree with you, but I have found that sometimes the strangest pairings make the most interesting stories.

That is my very first banner. I am trying my hand at GIMP (it's a tough one). I hopefully will have my banner for my own story up next.

IN HONOR OF GUY FAWKES DAY: Rules of Conduct Chapter 1: Oops, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net

Rules of Conduct Chapter 1: Oops, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net by BittyBlueEyes

Synopsis: A potion study gone terribly wrong causes Hermione and Fred to see each other in a whole new way. Rated M for language and possible suggestive themes. sorry no smut here *Complete*

Rating: M/R (for suggestions)

Pairing: Fred/Hermione

My View: Gryffindors are celebrating their victory in Quidditch when Fred tries to bring Hermione into the party. Hermione is working on a special potions project when Fred accidentally takes a swig of it. The potion brings about a wacky version of Freak Friday that is sure to have you laughing out loud. I loved this story which is why this author is also on my favorite author's list. I love magical mishap stories. The plot is outrageous and hilarious. Hermione learns about how to be a guy and play Fred even better than Fred while Fred learns how to be a girl and a better Hermione than even Hermione. Meanwhile no one can find out their little secret. Hijinks and hilarity ensues and in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, I say...

Enjoy!

Unexpected Consequences Chapter 1: Flight, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net

Unexpected Consequences Chapter 1: Flight, a harry potter fanfic - FanFiction.Net by Kimberlee18

Synopsis: Hermione has been living with Sirius and Remus in Grimmauld place for a year. Everything has been going well until one fateful full moon when the wolfsbane potion fails and Hermione gets bitten. How will she handle her new life? Mature. HG/RL,HG/SB. Note: This story takes place about a year after the final battle. In this fiction Sirius Black never fell through the veil, Remus Lupin and Severus Snape lived, and Tonks never existed. This fic is rated M for language and scenes of a mature nature later on. This fic is mostly HG/RL with some HG/SB as a possibility later on.

Rating: M/R (for a few mature scenes, but nothing too smutty)

Pairing: Remus/Hermione, Hermione/Sirius (believe me it works!)

My View: I am surprised that this story has so few reviews. It's not an incredibly long story, but it's well done and there aren't many like this. Few authors out there can take the "Hermione got bit" plot and really see it through to the end. Most give up after a few chapters which is why this story is on my favorites list. I enjoyed Kimberlee's take on this plot. She gives reasonable explanations about werewolves, a well structured plot, and smooth follow through. Remus bites Hermione one night when the wolfbane's potion is taken too late. I adore how she wrote Hermione to be strong through this ordeal. Too many writers make Hermione incredibly weepy and too emotional for my tastes, but this author nailed it. I liked how Remus, Sirius, and Snape were written. Snape and Hermione are friends which I adore. I like the SS/HG pairings (they are my FAVORITE, but I do enjoy them as friends). Remus and Sirius promise to help her through the transformation, but what they didn't anticipate... was what a girl goes through. Fast paced and enjoyable little read. I was slightly saddened that Tonks wouldn't exist in this story, but it probably made the story simpler to write and follow. Check it out!
